ABOUT THE EVENT

PILATES GIVES IN THE SEASON OF GIVING

In support of Home Nursing Foundation, PILATES GIVES will be running complimentary online Pilates classes for anyone who has made a donation to the foundation.

You can join all the sessions with a one-time giving or you can donate for each session that you will be joining.

100% of your donations go to the foundation to provide for frail, bedbound or homebound patients with professional therapy, nursing and medical care in their homes.

A $15 donation to the foundation would provide a lonely elderly with five hours of home personal care visits, assisting them with basic housekeeping, elder-sitting and exercises.

Every $100 donation would equate to two home medical sessions where a doctor visits homebound patients to remove the hassle of making multiple trips to hospital.

Shirley hip roll tower.jpeg

SHIRLEY RUESEN

Shirley Ruesen is a certified STOTT Pilates Matwork & Reformer Level 1 and 2 instructor. She is also a Barre certified instructor. She has completed training for STOTT Intensive Cadillac, Barrels, Injuries and Special Population, pre- and post-natal Pilates, Facia Anatomy Trains in Motion endorsed by Tom Myers, and Pilates Grace of Movement trained by Ruth Alper (disciple of Eve Gentry who was one of the first generation teachers who worked directly with the father of Pilates Joseph Pilates).

Her first Pilates teachers in the Netherlands and Turkey as well as her instructor trainers were all former performing ballet dancers. This has formed the basis on how Shirley interprets the Pilates method: she builds her programmes focussing on lengthening and strengthening the muscles, moving the body with fluidity and flow, and executing the movement with control. As an avid runner, she has experienced how Pilates has helped her to train for the 21km half marathon or even her next Spartan races. Not only do such extreme sports require core strength to endure the longer distances, muscles around the hip, knee and ankle areas must be doubly strengthened and lengthened.

Shirley has always enjoyed sports and movement. Now at 50, she is feeling fitter, stronger and better aligned than ever before! Besides Pilates and running, she is in love with my weekly Muay thai classes and a friendly match of beach volleyball. No matter what she does, she feels the effect of what Pilates has thought her and learned how to move efficiently. She is driven to pass on the lasting effects of the Pilates method because she has a firm belief that we should all enjoy living in aligned, strong and flexible body. It makes Shirley exceptionally happy to see her clients walking out of the studio feeling taller, more flexible, stronger and moving with ease and grace.

LEI MUI

Lei Mui is a certified STOTT Pilates Matwork and Reformer instructor. She has also completed training for STOTT Injuries and Special Population, pre- and post-natal Pilates. She teaches group Pilates classes at The Pilates Place.

The promise of getting stronger and achieving leaner muscles through Pilates drew her interest more than 10 years ago. Not only did her posture and backache improve over time, Pilates also helped her build strength and endurance. The amazing result was a testament to how Pilates is an exercise for all ages to gain “longevity” for the spine.

As an instructor, Lei Mui endeavours to help people around her to reap the benefits from practising mindful movement through Pilates.

RACHEL LOKE

Rachel Loke is a certified classical Matwork and STOTT Reformer Pilates Instructor. She has also completed training for STOTT Intensive Cadillac and Chair. She teaches Pilates using mixed equipment both on a group basis and private session at Breathe Pilates. Prior to that, she was teaching at Virgin Active, Upside Motion and The Pilates Place.

She started her journey as a Pilates Instructor in 2015 with the late Master Teacher Alvin Giam who started the first Pilates studio in Singapore. What got her started was the desire to learn the Pilates techniques thoroughly to benefit her body in the most efficient way.

Rachel has a strong interest in rehabilitative Pilates programme, particularly so as she has experienced first hand how Pilates has helped her in her post-op knee recovery. Pilates has also helped her in addressing lower back pain as a result of long hours of sitting and frequent flying during her days at corporate work.

The emphasis of hip, knee and ankle alignment alongside the five basic principles of Pilates form the basis of her programming for her classes. She delights in seeing how her clients’ overall well-being have benefitted from practising mindful movement.
